If extensive part of the tooth has decay, or missing, or there is already a large filling, the tooth can be restored and preserved by inlays or onlays. The healthy tooth structure can be preserved so they are a more conservative alternative to crowns. They provide precise fit to the tooth surface and mimic the natural appearance of the tooth contours. Because of the good seal further decay is unlikely. They last longer and more durable and more aesthetic than traditional fillings. Inlay covers the centre of the chewing surface, onlay is more extensive, covers the whole biting surface and parts of the occlusional surface.
The procedure
During the first visit the dentist prepares tooth by removing the old filling and decay thoroughly, then takes a moulded impression and places temporal filling. The dental technician fabricates the onlays and inlays out of porcelain. They are shaped exactly like a filling that tooth would need. The inlays and onlays are then cemented on the teeth during the second visit.
They can be made out of gold, composite or porcelain. The process usually takes a week.
